Justin - our new skipper; tributes to Gar Eddie - 07/06/2010
Our new captain for 2010/11 will be Justin Jones, an experienced flanker who started in eighteen games for last season’s successful team and had one of his best campaigns for the club. Justin first played league rugby for us against Newbridge at home on February 18th 2006, a game we won 26-24. He has seen premiership action with Maesteg, Swansea and Pontypridd and is also a member of the British Police team. Rugby manager Brian Mills says that Justin is a great influence on the team and a player who would lead by example. He will be replacing Gareth Edwards, a man who has made a giant contribution to the club as skipper for the last seven years, a club record in itself. Brian described his input as impeccable, a man who led by example, often despite injuries, since progressing from our Youth to make a league debut against Tenby away on September 21 1996. “He is up there with the greatest ever players to serve this club, his loyalty second to none,” he said. Dennis John was also fulsome in his praises, stating that he couldn’t speak highly enough of him. “He threw everything into the game for Llanharan and there were times he held us together when things were tough. “It was typical of him that when we needed a tight head he willingly moved up from his favourite number four position to develop to the extent that premiership clubs were asking about signing him,” added the coach who is himself about to start a ninth season at the helm, another record. “However, in Justin we have a player who is capable of taking over from him and he will be another to lead by example, being the highly respected man that he is.” Dai Atkins will remain as vice captain. Last year the classy centre put a troubled series of injuries behind him to appear in sixteen of our league games and his subtle mid field skills were a major catalyst in our attacking play.
