Llanharan into final - 19/05/2010 - St Peters (ED Cup SF)
Llanharan secured a place in the final of the East District Cup with a somewhat fortuitous semi final victory over St Peters by 23 points to 19. Llanharan gave a first team debut to youth player Scot Malone, son of forwards coach Colin at number 6. Also in the starting line up was youth and Wales Under 18 cap , full back Harley Thompson and veteran Wayne Jervis in the centre. Codey Rees opened the scoring for Llanharan after 5 minutes with a well struck penalty. The remainder of the first half belonged to St peters who despite having one yellow card stunned Llanharan with two tries, one of which was converted to lead 12 points to 6 at half time. The second half started similar to the first with an early penalty from Codey Rees. St Peters tactics of playing on the edge were clearly disrupting Llanharan and also upsetting the referee who issued two further yellow cards in the 54th and 56th minute with Codey Rees adding a further penalty from the latter. The numbers advantage proved to much for St Peters and Aled Llewellyn forced his way over for a try converted by Rees after 63 Minutes for Llanharan to take the lead for the first time 16 – 12. Afurther try came from Harley Thompson after 68 minutes converted by Rees and with the score 23 – 12 Llanharan seemed to be pulling away. Not so though as St Peters came back with a converted try on 74 minutes to bring the score to 23 – 19 and leave the Division One East outfit with an anxious few minutes. Coach Dennis John was relieved at the end of the game and congratulated St Peters on their effort. He was also pleased with the performances of our youth players, Scot Malone, Harley Thompson and Zach O’Driscoll who came on as a second half substitute. Llanharan now play Cardiff HSOB in the final at Glamorgan Wanderers ground next Monday, 24th May 2010.
